Did She Recite That ‘Po-yem’?

This word is often mispronounced as ‘po-yEM’.

In standard English, we should pronounce it as ‘PO-em’. There are two vowel sounds in this word - ‘oh’ and ‘em’.

  • She wrote a very moving po-em about the Singapore river and how her aged father had to toil away at the go-downs to bring food home. Her eyes welled up with tears as she read the poem to us.
