The Speak Good English Movement is a nationwide movement to encourage Singaporeans to speak grammatically correct English that is universally understood. It is to get Singaporeans to speak English with confidence at work, at home and at play. The movement was launched in the year 2000 by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.

Main Aims

The central message of the movement is to get Singaporeans to:

1. Speak in Standard English so as to be understood by all English speakers in this globalised and highly-interconnected world.

2. Pay attention to accurate pronunciation. However, this is not about acquiring a new foreign accent.

Staying Relevant

Each year, new themes and focuses are developed to ensure the movement continues to be relevant to the lives of Singaporeans.

Events and Partners

The Movement has also been especially successful in reaching out to Singaporeans from all walks of life with help from our partner organizations in their areas of expertise. This has allowed Singaporeans who are keen to improve their standard of spoken English to choose to learn from a wide range of programmes, activities and courses all year round.
