Using Standard Spoken English at Home
Partner: RELC
As part of their 40th anniversary celebrations, RELC partners with the Speak Good English Movement and National Library Board to present a series of 3 talks targeted at parents on how to influence their children to speak and use standard English.

Title of talk: Using Standard Spoken English at Home
Speaker: Dr Gloria Poedjosoedarmo
Synopsis:
Many Singaporean parents speak Singlish to their children during their early years because they feel – either consciously or unconsciously – that Standard English is “too difficult”. As a result, children often enter school speaking English, but not the type of English that is required for academic work and examinations.
This talk conducted by Regional Language Centre (RELC) will provide suggestions and advice on how parents can be model Standard English speakers for their children to prepare them for success in school.
