Getting To Know The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)

A 2-hour workshop on the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) was conducted for the public to introduce them to the sounds and symbols of the English Language through related activities, games and puzzles.

It was targeted at 19-year olds and above to familiarise themselves with the symbols used and to encourage them to check up word pronunciations in the dictionary. The sessions were conducted by associate professors at the English Language & Literature group of NIE, Dr David Deterding and Dr Low Ee Ling.
Dr Low is also a member of the national committee of the Speak Good English Movement (SGEM) 2006. The IPA sounds and symbols compiled by Dr David Deterding are also featured on the SGEM website with audio clips to help users learn how to pronounce consonants and vowels using phonetics.
