READi Course For Reading Facilitators
Partner: Society for Reading & Literacy (SRL)
READi is a project by SRL to reach out to children with reading difficulties. Speak Good English Movement (SGEM) 2005 supported READi by offering partial sponsorships to deserving volunteers who had attended the 2-month Course for Reading Facilitators.
| Date: | 15 February – 9 April 2005 |
| Time: | 2pm – 5pm and 6:30pm – 9:30pm |
| Venue: | International Business and Management Education Centre (IBMEC) |
| Fee: | S$650 for SRL members, S$700 for non-members |
Ms Jean Chua, a KidsREAD volunteer coordinator with the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC), was one of the recipients of the partial SGEM sponsorship. Ms Chua has been volunteering in the reading programme for underprivileged children at the Redhill Student Service Centre since 2003.
Some 9 other volunteers involved in reading programmes or literacy volunteer work also received partial sponsorships. In return, they pledged 6 months of volunteer work in any reading or literacy programme for children, youth or adults.
The course was open to teachers, tutors, parents, volunteers, social workers and anyone interested in identifying reading difficulties in children and learning strategies for helping these children overcome reading problems. In addition to hands-on classroom learning, the course included a practical workshop on the READi Facilitation Model.
With the skills acquired from this course, these reading facilitators would then carry out para-intervention or remedial reading sessions in schools, voluntary welfare organisations and libraries.
