The DRAMAzing Race
Partner: Singapore Drama Educators Association (SDEA)
Some 150 students from 29 secondary schools raced around the island in teams of 5 to decipher clues at 8 different library locations to accomplish various tasks through the use of good spoken English and creativity.
| Date: | 22 March 2003 |
| Time: | 9am – 4pm |
| Venue: | Ang Mo Kio Community Library (AMCL)
Bedok Community Library (BECL) Central Community Library (CTCL) Library @ Orchard (OCCL) Library @ Esplanade (EPCL) Marine Parade Community Library (MPCL) Tampines Regional Library (TRL) Woodlands Regional Library (WRL) |
Jointly organised by the Speak Good English Movement (SGEM) committee, National Library Board (NLB) and Singapore Drama Educators Association (SDEA), the SDEA DRAMAzing Race was an inter-school competition for 14 – 17 year old students to:
- build up their confidence in speaking good English spontaneously
- foster strong team camaraderie
- encourage creativity and spontaneity amongst youths
- promote the spirit of healthy competition between youths of different ages from different schools
- encourage independent thinking and decision-making
At each station, teams had to create and present a cheer about speaking good English before completing their task. They were tested on their language application skills, knowledge of National Library branches and a classic literature, Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. Teams were required to collect a peg and pose for group pictures as evidence that they had visited all the stations.
At the finishing line, the teams were judged in the following categories:
| Award Name | Award Criteria |
| Team Speed | Top 3 teams who completed all 8 tasks in the fastest time. |
| Team Spirit | Top 3 teams with the best cheer. |
| Team Spontaneity | Top 3 teams who performed challenges with ease and conviction. |
| Team Creativity | Top 3 teams who are the most innovative in improvising role-play and dramatisation. |
| Team Photogenic | Top 3 teams with the most creative pictures. |
Prizes included 50 tickets to “Oliver! – The Musical”, an exclusive backstage tour, a special workshop with the cast and crew, and exclusive merchandise from “Oliver! – The Musical”.
The DRAMAzing Race was conceptualized by Oniatta Effendi for Speak Good English Movement (SGEM) 2003.
