RELC Workshop 3: Make an Impression – Presenting with Confidence

Research has shown that more people are afraid of speaking in public than of dying! This talk aims to increase the confidence and competence of those who may need to make presentations at work or in their social lives and to reduce the fear factor.

It outlines the basics of good presentations and looks at features of structure, language and paralinguistics using a range of examples and activities. Participants will be given a series of tips that will help them impress their audience with their delivery skills.

Date: Wednesday, 3 February 2010, 7:30pm – 8:30pm

The workshop is conducted free-of-charge.

A note about the speaker

Ms Linda Hanington started her career in Europe and taught modern languages and English in a number of countries including the UK, Germany, Austria and Spain. She moved to Singapore in 1987 and has since worked with a wide range of students of different ages and nationalities.

She has extensive experience in training teachers from Singapore and other countries on post-graduate and in-service programmes and significant experience of academic management and staff development

British Council presents “One Small Step”

Rocket launches, satellites, tremendous g-forces, orbits around the Earth and those breathtaking first steps … all are recreated on stage in Oxford Playhouse’s production of ONE SMALL STEP, touching down in Singapore in January.

This out-of-the-world production, which won rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, tells the story of the Space Race in just 60 minutes, using two actors, a couple of buckets, a lamp or two, a heap of cardboard boxes and a giant leap of the imagination. It’s inventive, hilarious and moving, a fitting tribute to the generation of men and women who devoted their lives to the dream of space travel.

It is the PERFECT play for the next generation (ages 7 and above) of scientists, engineers and explorers (and their families) everywhere!

So check your oxygen, adjust your spacesuit and buckle up…. Fast, furious and really rather funny, the ignition sequence has begun…

Did I Hear You Write?

Many children enjoy listening to stories, telling stories, reading stories, but too few enjoy writing them. Discover how you can harness that enthusiasm for stories and channel it into creative writing. This workshop will show how speaking, listening and reading activities can be woven into the writing process, to engage pupils in a holistic language learning environment.

The workshop will be highly interactive, it will include some formal presentations and demonstration of the techniques by the trainer and lots of participation by the attendees.

In the workshop you will:

learn how storytelling can be used to enhance pupils creative writing.
Experience activities that that can be used in classrooms to bridge the oral and written forms of the language and improve both.
discover which types of stories will lend themselves to the creative writing process.

This workshop is suitable for primary school language teachers, or anyone working with improving the language skills of learners at different levels. Comprehensive handouts will be given to all participants.

Growing Stories – A Storytelling Workshop for Parents and Other Caregivers

Studies have found that one of the best predictors of later educational success is the number of interesting stories a child had been told. In this workshop you will discover how you can foster your child’s intellectual, emotional and social development and lay the groundwork for literacy and language learning through telling stories to your children.

What are the benefits of storytelling for you and your children?
What types of stories and storytelling styles will appeal to children of different ages?
Types of story you can tell
How to unlock your personal stories
Some simple easy-to-tell-stories
Some fun storytelling activities to explore

RELC Workshop 2: Making Story-time Meaningful – Skills for Reading Aloud

Not many people can tell stories off the top of their heads. While storytelling develops an understanding, respect and appreciation for other cultures, research has shown that reading aloud to young children promotes the development of language and other emergent literacy skills, which in turn help children prepare for school.

This talk will share tips on how parents can not only inculcate the love for reading but develop better language skills through story reading.
