Being brought up in an English-speaking environment does not necessarily mean that every Singaporean child is able to speak Standard Singapore English (SSE) as they are equally exposed to Singapore Colloquial English (SCE) which is the informal variety of English with influences from Chinese and Malay.
Nonetheless, the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in the appropriate context is a crucial skill for a globalised world. This talk will provide more information on how parents can distinguish between the uses of both forms of English and be role-models in speaking ‘Good English’.
