Workshop 3: Singlish vs Standard English

For many, the hallmark of being a Singaporean is to speak in Singlish. We do this so naturally that we use Singlish even when we should be speaking in Standard English instead.

At this workshop, Matthew Winchester will raise the awareness of the difference between Singlish and English as well as point out which are the occasions when it is, or is not, appropriate to use the colloquial language.

He will also be highlighting the common errors in the use of English. These errors include the often mistaken usage of “Yet” and “Already”, and “Countable” and “Uncountable”.

Anyone interested in this topic is welcome to sign up.

Date: Saturday, 22 August 2009, 2.30pm to 4.30pm
Location: Programme Zone, Level 1, Woodlands Regional Library – 900 South Woodlands Drive, Singapore 730900
